Farmers Back Home in Marathwada Suffer Crop Ruin Due to Rain & Flood
Heavy rains and floods have devastated farmlands in Marathwada, leaving students from farming families in Pune deeply worried. Many families have suffered massive crop losses, increasing financial distress across the region.
The unrelenting rain across Marathwada has caused severe damage to farmlands, wiping out standing kharif crops such as soybean, cotton, and tur. Students from farming families studying in Pune have shared that their families’ farms are submerged, and entire fields have been washed away. The loss has not only affected the local economy but also added emotional stress for these students living far from home.
Districts like Beed, Parbhani, and Latur are among the worst-hit, with hundreds of hectares under water. Farmers who had already faced erratic monsoons earlier this year now find themselves battling another disaster. With limited insurance coverage and pending compensation, the road to recovery looks uncertain.
In Pune, many college students from farming families have expressed deep concern about their parents’ well-being. “My family’s two acres of soybean are gone. I can’t even think of how we’ll repay the crop loan,” said one student from Beed. The emotional burden has taken a toll on their studies, with some even considering returning home to help.
Agricultural experts have pointed out that poor drainage systems and lack of timely irrigation planning have worsened the impact of heavy rainfall. The repeated cycles of drought and floods in Marathwada have exposed the urgent need for sustainable water management and crop diversification strategies.
The state government has announced initial surveys to assess the damage, promising compensation under the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF). However, many farmers fear delays in implementation. As the water recedes, the true extent of agricultural loss and debt will become clearer, shaping yet another tough season for Marathwada’s farming community.
