Gadkari Stresses Long-Term Measures to Strengthen Farmers’ Future
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the need for long-term, sustainable measures to address farmers’ challenges. He highlighted water management, diversification of crops, and renewable energy as key areas to secure rural livelihoods.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has underlined the importance of long-term strategies to strengthen the agricultural sector and safeguard the future of farmers. Speaking at a farmers’ interaction program, he noted that short-term relief measures, though helpful, cannot ensure stability. Instead, systemic reforms in areas such as irrigation management, crop diversification, and renewable energy integration are crucial for lasting change in rural India.
Gadkari stressed the urgent need for efficient water use in agriculture. He pointed out that nearly 80% of India’s freshwater is consumed by farming, and unless proper irrigation techniques like drip and sprinkler systems are widely adopted, water scarcity will continue to threaten farming sustainability. He urged farmers and policymakers to collaborate on shifting to modern water-saving technologies.
Highlighting crop diversification, Gadkari suggested that farmers should move away from a narrow focus on traditional crops such as sugarcane and wheat. He advocated the cultivation of oilseeds, pulses, and high-value horticultural crops that require less water and offer better profitability. This shift, he said, could not only improve income security for farmers but also reduce India’s import dependence on edible oils and pulses.
The Minister also emphasized renewable energy adoption in rural areas, particularly solar-powered pumps and bio-energy projects. By reducing reliance on costly electricity and fossil fuels, farmers can lower their input costs while contributing to climate-friendly farming practices. Gadkari assured that the government is committed to expanding subsidies and support for such initiatives.
Concluding his remarks, Gadkari appealed for an integrated approach that combines technology, policy support, and farmer participation. He stated that agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, and safeguarding farmers through long-term reforms is the only way to achieve sustainable growth. His message resonated strongly with rural communities facing recurring challenges from climate change, rising costs, and fluctuating markets.
