Agri-Tech Revolution: Nitin Gadkari Applauds Prataprao Pawar’s AI Initiatives; Google & Microsoft Satellite Data to Guide Vidarbha Farmers
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has lauded Prataprao Pawar for his pioneering work in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into agriculture. Speaking at an event in Pune, Gadkari revealed that an AI-based pilot project is being implemented for 1,000 farmers in Vidarbha, utilizing satellite data from Google and Microsoft to provide real-time insights on crop health, water needs, and fertilizer application.
The landscape of Indian agriculture is shifting from traditional methods to data-driven precision farming. As of May 11, 2026, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing farmer distress, particularly in the suicide-prone region of Vidarbha. While attending a ceremony to confer the Punyabhushan Award upon Dr. Abhay Firodia (Chairman, Force Motors), Gadkari specifically noted that Prataprao Pawar's efforts in bringing AI to the grassroots level are noteworthy and highly effective.
Gadkari shared a personal experience during his speech, illustrating the power of modern technology. He mentioned receiving high-resolution satellite imagery of his own sugarcane fields directly on his mobile phone. These images, facilitated by Google and Microsoft through American satellite networks, provide precise data on:
-
Water Requirements: Identifying exactly which patches of the field need irrigation.
-
Nutrient Management: Specifying the type and quantity of fertilizer needed based on crop color and growth patterns.
-
Pest Detection: Early warning signs of infestation before they become visible to the naked eye.
Currently, under the guidance of Prataprao Pawar, a specialized AI project is being rolled out for 1,000 farmers in Vidarbha. This initiative aims to increase productivity and reduce input costs, which are critical factors in making farming sustainable. Gadkari emphasized that when ethics are combined with business and technology, it serves the larger goal of nation-building. He expressed immense satisfaction with this progress, stating that such technological advancements are the key to ending the agrarian crisis and ensuring that farmers have access to the same high-tech tools used in developed nations.
