Maharashtra Extends Electricity Subsidy for Lift Irrigation Schemes Until 2027
The Maharashtra government has extended the electricity subsidy for 1,789 lift irrigation schemes until March 2027, ensuring affordable power access for farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity.
The Maharashtra state cabinet, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved an extension of the electricity subsidy for lift irrigation schemes until March 2027. Covering 1,789 schemes, the initiative provides affordable energy access for farmers—crucial for ensuring consistent irrigation and stable crop outputs.
Under the revised structure, high and ultra-high-pressure users will be charged just ₹1.16 per unit along with ₹25 per KVA monthly, while low-pressure users will pay ₹1 per unit and a ₹15 per horsepower charge monthly. This setup offers much-needed relief for small and medium farmers grappling with rising input costs.
To address the financial implications for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the state has allocated ₹886.15 crore for FY 2025–26 and ₹872.23 crore for FY 2026–27. These funds will offset revenue loss from the subsidy, ensuring the scheme's financial sustainability without compromising utility operations.
Experts agree that this subsidy extension is vital for enhancing agricultural productivity and sustaining rural livelihoods. By lowering electricity costs, the initiative helps farmers maintain timely irrigation, reduce crop stress, and remain competitive despite market volatility—reinforcing the state’s agriculture infrastructure.
Looking ahead, such policy commitments reaffirm Maharashtra’s focus on farmer-centric infrastructure. Continued support like this is instrumental in combating climatic uncertainties and sustaining crop yields. With the extension in place, stakeholders expect improved yield resilience and rural economic stability.
