Rajasthan Launches Campaign to Eradicate Invasive Vilayati Babool

Jaipur – In a significant step to protect the state’s agricultural lands and restore ecological balance, Rajasthan’s Panchayati Raj Minister Madan Dilawar has initiated a comprehensive campaign to eradicate Prosopis juliflora, commonly known as Vilayati Babool. The minister emphasized that simply cutting down the trees is insufficient; their roots must also be removed to prevent regrowth and ensure the long-term success of the program.

The campaign will initially target areas that are heavily infested with this invasive species. By prioritizing these regions, the initiative aims to restore native biodiversity, enhance soil fertility, and provide improved grazing resources for livestock. This multi-phase plan is expected to bring sustainable benefits to farmers and herders across the state.

Minister Dilawar highlighted that the aggressive spread of Vilayati Babool suppresses the growth of indigenous vegetation, depletes soil nutrients, and damages pasturelands. These factors collectively impact agricultural productivity and place significant economic and environmental strain on local farming and livestock communities.

To implement the plan effectively, the state government is coordinating with the Forest, Agriculture, and Rural Development departments. Local authorities and NGOs are also being engaged to ensure that tree removal, root extraction, and land restoration are carried out using advanced and environmentally sensitive methods, securing long-term ecological resilience.

Upon successful implementation, this initiative is expected to promote ecological restoration, safeguard biodiversity, and improve agricultural output in Rajasthan. Additionally, active community involvement will be encouraged, raising awareness about sustainable development and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across the region.
