Pune Receives Heavy Rain; IMD Issues Alerts for Districts

The city of Pune and surrounding regions witnessed heavy rainfall, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for parts of Maharashtra. The weather office has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts including Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur. This sudden shift in weather comes at a time when farmers are preparing for kharif crop harvesting.

The rainfall brought relief from the warm conditions but also raised concerns for the farming community. Excessive rainfall at this stage can damage standing crops such as soybean, cotton, and pulses, which are nearing the harvesting stage. Farmers have been advised to ensure proper drainage in fields to avoid waterlogging and to cover harvested produce to prevent spoilage.

According to IMD officials, the current weather activity is linked to a low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal, which is causing moisture-laden winds to move toward western Maharashtra. The impact is expected to continue for the next few days, with varying intensity across districts.

Agricultural experts suggest that while rain is beneficial for late-sown crops, excessive showers could harm crop quality and delay harvesting operations. Farmers who rely on open drying of produce such as pulses and onion are particularly vulnerable to sudden rainfall. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising caution.

The state government has assured that advisories will be regularly issued through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and local administration. Farmers are urged to remain updated with weather bulletins and take timely measures. With heavy rainfall likely to persist, preparedness is key to minimizing agricultural losses.
