Kharif Preparations: Jalgaon District Projects Demand for 4.2 Million Cotton Seed Packets; Over 2.8 Million Already Stocked
As the Kharif 2026 season approaches, the Agriculture Department has estimated a requirement of 4.2 million cotton seed packets for Jalgaon district. Currently, over 2.8 million packets are already available in the market, with authorities monitoring supplies to ensure farmers have access to their preferred varieties without facing artificial shortages.
With the monsoon season drawing near, the agricultural landscape in Jalgaon is gearing up for a massive cotton sowing operation. As of May 5, 2026, the district administration has finalized the demand estimates for cotton seeds. Given that Jalgaon is a major cotton-producing hub, the estimated requirement stands at 42 lakh (4.2 million) packets for the current season. To meet this demand, the state and private seed companies have already funneled a significant portion of the stock into the local market.
Current supply statistics indicate a stable situation:
-
Total Stock Received: Approximately 28.50 lakh (2.85 million) packets have already reached the district's distributors and retailers.
-
Balance Supply: The remaining 13.50 lakh packets are expected to arrive in phases before the peak sowing window in June.
-
Variety Preference: There is a high demand for specific high-yielding and pest-resistant hybrid varieties, and the department is coordinating to prevent black marketing of these popular seeds.
The Agriculture Department has issued a set of advisories for farmers to avoid being cheated. Farmers are urged to purchase seeds only from licensed dealers and must insist on an official receipt that mentions the lot number and variety name. Additionally, authorities have warned against the purchase of illegal 'HB' or uncertified seeds, which often lead to crop failure. Flying squads have been formed across all talukas of Jalgaon to conduct surprise raids on shops to check for hoarding and overpricing. With nearly 68% of the required stock already on the shelves, the district is well-positioned to commence sowing as soon as the first monsoon rains provide adequate soil moisture.
