Turmeric Prices Surge by ₹3,000 in Hingoli & Basmat: Fresh Arrivals Peak as Market Reopens After Annual Break
Following the annual accounting break, the Sant Namdev Turmeric Market in Hingoli and the Basmat APMC witnessed a massive surge in turmeric prices, jumping by nearly ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per quintal. With fresh arrivals from Parbhani, Nanded, and Washim hitting the yards, farmers are now securing average rates of ₹14,200 per quintal.
The turmeric markets in Marathwada have reopened with a "golden" surprise for farmers as of April 8, 2026. After a brief closure for annual accounting (from March 26 to April 5), the Sant Namdev Turmeric Market in Hingoli saw a significant improvement in both arrivals and pricing. On Tuesday, April 7, the market received 2,280 quintals of fresh turmeric. Prices have seen a sharp correction compared to March, with the current maximum rate hitting ₹15,300 per quintal, while the average rate stood at a solid ₹14,200.
The trend is similar in the neighboring Basmat APMC, where arrivals reached 2,500 quintals on the same day. According to S. N. Shinde, Secretary of the Basmat Market Committee, turmeric prices have surged by ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 since Monday. In March, rates were hovering between ₹11,000 and ₹12,000, but they have now stabilized between ₹13,000 and ₹15,000 per quintal. This sudden price hike is providing much-needed relief to growers who were worried about stagnant rates during the peak harvest season.
Market Secretary Sampat Mundhe noted that the market is currently seeing 100% arrivals of new turmeric. Beyond Hingoli, farmers from Parbhani, Nanded, Washim, and Yavatmal are also flocking to these yards to take advantage of the improved rates. On average, the markets are handling between 1,500 to 2,000 quintals daily. The resumption of open auctions on April 6 has brought transparency and competitive bidding back to the yard, further boosting the confidence of the farming community.
Agricultural experts suggest that this price rally is driven by strong domestic demand and the superior quality of the new harvest. As the harvesting season reaches its peak, the supply is expected to remain consistent for the next few weeks. For farmers in the "Turmeric Belt" of Maharashtra, the current rates of over ₹14,000 per quintal represent a significant improvement over the previous month’s average of ₹12,500. With more arrivals expected from across the region, Hingoli continues to cement its position as a primary hub for turmeric trade in India.
