Empowering Women in Agriculture: India Launches 'National Gender Platform' to Support 3.6 Crore Women Farmers

In a landmark decision to recognize the backbone of India's rural economy, the Central Government has officially operationalized the 'National Gender Platform' for women farmers. This digital and strategic initiative is designed to address the unique challenges faced by women in the agricultural sector, who currently make up a significant portion of the workforce but often lack formal land rights and access to institutional credit.

As per the latest data, there are approximately 3.6 crore women actively engaged as primary workers in Indian agriculture. Despite their massive contribution, their access to government subsidies and modern farming tools has historically been lower than their male counterparts. The National Gender Platform aims to serve as a unified hub where women farmers can access gender-specific training, information on specialized equipment, and direct benefit transfers (DBT).

The platform also focuses on "Gender Mainstreaming" in existing agricultural schemes. It mandates that a specific percentage of funds in major projects like the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) and the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) be directed toward women-led farming households. In Maharashtra, where women play a crucial role in dairy and horticulture, this platform is expected to accelerate the formation of Women Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).

Furthermore, the initiative includes a dedicated portal for monitoring the progress of women in various agri-subsectors. This data-driven approach will help policymakers identify regions where women are lagging in resource adoption. The government has also encouraged state agricultural universities and KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendras) to use this platform to disseminate "women-friendly" technology, such as lightweight tillers and specialized sowing tools.

The launch of the National Gender Platform is seen as a major step toward achieving the goals of the National Policy for Farmers, which emphasizes the need for gender-sensitive agricultural development. By empowering 3.6 crore women with the right tools and information, the government aims to not only increase household incomes but also ensure long-term food security for the nation.
